DIEGO G3 functionality ranking

This may be a frequent doubt whether choose KME gas installation set or any other. Well, we do not want our words to be slogans only – we welcome you to get familiar with the detailed description of particular functionalities of our products we would like to highlight.

More than 10 years of experience is a great advantage. There are bunches of breaking-through and innovative functions, some of them are already present in other systems, but may times they are introduced there without deep understanding of the vehicle electronics, diagnostics or physical and chemical processes present in the engines and powertrain automation.

Detailed descriptions you may find in the manuals attached to the installation software. We would like to pay your attention to the changelog that can be found through Help/Documentation menu. In case of any doubt, please call our infoline +48 422 999 139.

Assisted installation

Confirmation of actions that might result in unexpected effect.

This controversial strategy has as many friends as opponents. In many points of the procedure, both during the configuration and calibration, there are many alert messages that require to pay attention to a potential mistake. The most frequent one is leaving non-optimal size of the nozzles or not conducting two-step calibration. Of course in most cases the car will be able to leave immediately the workshop on gas and the customer will pay for the service. Fast calibration present in competitive systems does not necessarily mean the perfect calibration. The effects may be visible just the day after (during the start of the cold engine and first gas switching) or after the long high load drive with (damage of the catalytic converter). The next important thing is attention to the working pressures and temperatures (with pop-up windows) that tracks the potential mechanical parts assembly errors. Easy to follow configuration assistant is an element of ordering the process too. It is always important to remember that electronics cannot act as a remedy for mounting faults.

RPM wire not connected

Possibility to skip connection of difficult to find engine speed signal

The RPM wire is usually connected only for “historical” reasons. Why do other systems still require it? The genesis comes from the safety regulations that require gas valves shut-off in the case of unexpected stalling of the engine. The easiest way is to use engine speed signal. Unfortunately it is often very difficult to find it and if found may be disturbed by the ignition system.

As an alternative DIEGO G3 system has a monitoring algorithm that tracks petrol injection signal and pressure dynamics, having a possibility to recognize stalling condition and switching valves in most vehicles below 0,5 second.

Adaptation without OBD

Automatic adjustment of gas injection parameters following eternal conditions change

Mechanical parts of the gas kit are naturally decreasing their performance. This process takes enough long time in the case of high quality injectors, filters or reducers for reaching the regular maintenance period. But in the nowadays price pressure it is hard to find ideal components.

As a great help comes the adaptation. The requirement for turning this function on is performing test road on petrol in order to create so called “template” from the points of the map. Gas control unit having a reliable petrol burning process, makes a delicate corrections in the gas injection strategy in order to keep the system in onboard diagnostic factory limits. This mechanism is a perfect solution for both vehicles equipped and not equipped with OBD II/EOBD compliant system. Moreover it is much less vulnerable to uncontrolled oscillations of regulated value than OBD corrections based adaptation.

Load monitoring

Load calculation and display for all petrol and gas injectors

During the high load of the engine it is extremely important to exactly forecast and detect the moment of injection phase merging of the particular injector (also called injectors full open). DIEGO G3 system gives a possibility to observe this phenomenon for both gas and petrol, for each injector separately. Understanding of the reason is then much easier, but the greater advantage is possibility to use this information by gas control unit to switch to petrol temporarily.

Switching to petrol temporarily

Rich set of functions of momentarily switching to petrol with automatic return to gas

Those functions are perfectly suited for high capacity vehicles or those after tuning. In DIEGO G3 system we can use simple switching conditions like minimum or maximum engine speed or petrol injectors constantly open. But in difficult cases there are unique functions based on load monitoring, gas and reducer temperatures. Also the possibility of short time petrol switching during the end phase of cut-off improves the comfort of using gas converted vehicle.

Gas temperature elevation

Additional delay of gas switching controlled by gas temperature sensor

There is always a compromise between the short delay from starting of the engine to the switching of fuel to gas and a risk of mechanical damage of gas installation elements caused by the uncontrolled air-fuel mixture. That issue is often a topic of hot discussions between the installer and vehicle owner. There are numerous functions of DIEGO G3 system that assist so called first switching, but the most efficient is waiting for reducer/vaporizer warming. The unique function is continuous control of delay time based on the ambient temperature. This option may be turned on in the third step of assistant (in advanced view only).

Consistent injectors heating

Multistage injector heating mechanisms based on temperature and pressure

In order to open gas injector for the first time, especially when it got dirty by polluted gas, the strategy of turning on the electric current on injectors is used. This is done before switching the fueling on gas. The problem is that the moment of their actual unsticking is in practice impossible to measure. In contrast to the other ECUs, DIEGO G3 also controls pressures in the system in order to not destabilize air-fuel mixture. Then it fills up the gas components in a controlled way, pushing out the impossible to estimate amount of air that gets there during the heating procedure. In this way the vehicle switches to gas smoothly without shaking of the engine.

Injectors test

Measurement procedure for the actual individual gas injector output

Innovative method of the physical performance of individual injector unit is used for discovering and correction of the factory imperfection or actual operational deterioration. Often criticized because deliveries the proof of low quality of the injectors. Unequal output between units results in higher fuel consumption, possibility of reaching the factory adaptation limits and switching off particular cylinders, finally “check engine” lamp becomes lit.

By performing injector test procedure we receive correction factors for each unit (expressed in percent). That serves as clear information about their wear and tear. Corrections can be saved in the ECU (together with the internal data about their linearity) and they will be used in calculation algorithms for the equalizing the output in the whole range of load.

Single injector error detection

Configurable mechanism of petrol injectors operation control

If the petrol ECU senses the malfunction of the petrol injector and switches it off it is evidence of the serious problem and in such case gas system should be switched off immediately. DIEGO G3 has this control mechanism enabled by default. There is an option of turning it off knowingly for specific engines (those switching off cylinder on low load or idle). For high load the option is always active. This function called usually HEMI we can find in the fourth step of assistant (in advanced view).

Phase overlap while switching

Controlled delay of petrol injector emulator during fuel switching

Acting elements of injector emulator used in DIEGO G3 system are fully protected power transistors. Using them gives a possibility of instant connecting and disconnecting of petrol injectors that is impossible to do in traditional relay-based emulators. During the gas switching procedure we can additionally set up a delay of switching off the petrol injection that eliminates engine shaking when long intake manifold gas hoses are used. This is especially visible while switching on idle run.

Universal OBD adapter

OBD device that can be used for calibration, left in the car for a few days or forever, as an autonomic scanner

OBD system having a strong emotional response through installers possible to connect to the gas system is actually an advanced controller of petrol injection parameters. Its externally visible (demanded by the law) parameters like short-term and long-term fuel trims are the result of internal algorithms, which in turn are the particular vehicle manufacturer secret. For this reason automatic adjustment of gas dosing based on OBD corrections should not be treated as a remedy for limited knowledge of installers. Inserting an additional factor to the feedback loop of two controllers: gas and petrol is a dangerous task. First the original strategies of calculation of gas dose based on petrol dose must be prepared for such insertion. Then we usually do not know the parameters of petrol injection controller (especially time constants, attenuation factors, etc.) or it is difficult to estimate them. This is why we put our best effort and knowledge of automation, control systems and mathematical analysis, in order to fulfill this task. In turn we expect the installer understanding OBD mechanisms.

The adapter may be used in several modes. The most important is the parallel display of OBD readouts together with gas installation parameters. In the bottom part of the software there is a special OBD strip that helps viewing a mutual interactions of both systems.

The device may be also left in the vehicle for a few days in order to observe if the systems are not trying to decalibrate each other, which may be a result of installation mistakes, calibration errors or even original manufacturer software errors too. If the recorded data show good fitness of gas system to eh particular car and we do not see symptoms of sudden changes when the adapter is disconnected, we can disconnect it from the vehicle.

The easiest solution is mounting the adapter permanently and giving a chance to the statistical correctness of adjustment of changing parameters of petrol and gas system. If after longer period of driving the petro system indicates “check engine” error, it will be easy to find a malfunction in the petrol system or pay attention of the driver to visit an installation workshop in order to perform a scheduled maintenance or exchange the components that should be periodically replaced.

The OBD adapter can be connected to any version of DIEGO controller (since 2004), there is no need to purchase dedicated and more expensive sets.

Important for vehicle users. OBD adapter never clears errors registered in petrol electronic control unit. The original diagnostic functions remains intact.
